What To Know

  • NCIS: Origins reunites Gibbs and Tony in the October 20 episode.
  • The promo shows Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly together again.

Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly, Gibbs and Tony. The original NCIS duo are together again, this time on the prequel Origins, for the first time in over a decade, and honestly? We couldn’t be more thrilled. After CBS released a photo earlier in the day of the reunion, the network aired a preview after NCIS: Origins Season 3 Episode 2 teasing what’s to come.

Unsurprisingly, the video, which you can watch above, is all teeing up the reunion, the moment that fans have been waiting for since Harmon and Weatherly’s roles on the two shows were announced this summer, with clips from the ’90s timeline, including Adam Campbell‘s return as Ducky, leading up to the big moment picking up right where we last saw Gibbs, making his way into the director’s office. “I gave it to 10 to 1 odds you’d even show,” Tony remarks, sitting behind his desk. “I knew you’d show,” Gibbs says. It ends with a hug.

The latest Origins episode set up the reunion, with Gibbs turning to 83-year-old Woody (Bobby Moynihan) for help with the print he lifted off his own neck when two masked shooters interrupted his peaceful life in Alaska. “One down, one to go,” one of them said, thinking Gibbs was dead (thanks to a Marine breathing technique).

Woody was able to do enough of his magic that he could run the print, but the profile was locked up beyond his reach. Fortunately, “I know just who to take it to,” someone with serious access, Gibbs said: Director Tony DiNozzo.

And so the episode ended with Gibbs returning to the NCIS office, stopping by the team’s desks. “Whether it’s been 10 minutes or 10 years, when you need them, family’s always there,” he said in voiceover before walking into Tony’s office.

As showrunner David J. North told TV Insider for our digital cover story, having Harmon filming on that set again “felt surreal, incredible, hard to put into words. It was like coming home. Mark is amazing in those scenes. The fans are going to lose their minds.”
