Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) is missing his grandfather in Marshals Season 2. In our exclusive sneak peek at Marshals Season 2 Episode 3 (above), the teenager visits John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) grave after dad Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) saved him from being killed by Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey), who wanted the East Camp land. That acreage is the last piece of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch land still owned by the Duttons.
Marshals Season 2 Episode 2 airs on Sunday, October 11, at 8/7c on CBS. The episode, “End of Watch,” features a former cop launching a killing spree against those he blames for sabotaging his career. The Marshals close in, and one of their own finds themselves in the crosshairs of the vengeful killer. Also, Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) faces mounting political pressure and backlash over his leadership on the reservation, and Belle (Arielle Kebbel) struggles to keep her family life stable.
Kayce is concerned for his son’s emotional well-being after a second kidnapping. He finds him at John’s grave, which is on a plot full of final resting places for the Dutton family tree, including Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) and Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) from Yellowstone, as well as the Duttons from 1883 and 1923.
“Mr. Weaver was evil. I can’t believe I thought he was anything like grandpa,” Tate tells his dad in the scene from the episode.
“The Weavers fooled all of us, buddy. It’s OK not to be fine,” Kayce tells him.

Tom kidnapped Tate in the Marshals Season 1 finale to use him as leverage in land sale negotiations with Kayce. In the Season 2 opener on October 4, he revealed his true plans were to kill Tate and make it look like an accident, and then kill Kayce and make it look like self-defense after Kayce sought revenge. Tom would carry out this plan after Kayce signed over ownership of East Camp, but Kayce won the battle and saved his son. Tom tried to flee with his daughter, Dolly (Ellyn Jameson), but in his frenzy he caused a car crash that killed her. Tom survived and was imprisoned.
Kayce is terrified that his son won’t be able to escape the Dutton family legacy of constant violence.
“I know you’re worried. I don’t need rescuing anymore,” Tate says at John’s grave.
“My family legacy was never about land,” Kayce replies. “It’s about always having to fight. It takes a heavy toll, son.”
“Good thing I’m strong,” the teen says back. “It’s how you and grandpa raised me to be. It’s the Dutton way.” Kayce might not think that’s as good as it sounds.
Grimes told TV Insider after the Marshals Season 2 premiere that “Kayce had always tried to set himself apart from the rest of his family and live by that traditional, old-school cowboy code. Deep down, he tries his best to be a good person and wants to believe that about other people as much as possible.”
