Halloween might still be a few weeks away, but audiences were clearly ready for some scares –– cut with director Zach Cregger’s trademark streak of dark humor –– as ‘Resident Evil,’ the latest adaptation of Capcom’s long-running game franchise, opened to a franchise-best $60 million.
It was easily enough to secure the top spot as last week’s champ, ‘Practical Magic 2’ saw its charms start to wain quickly, falling to second on $12 million. The year’s most successful movie to date, meanwhile, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ was third with $6.5 million.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?
It’s reassuring to see animation/live-action legal comedy ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ showing some real staying power, validating the decision to release it.
Among other newcomers, Biblical movie ‘Daniel and the Fiery Furnace’ took eighth place via $2.9 million, while Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe’s historical drama ‘The Weight’ was ninth on $2.3 million.
