What To Know
- Wesley’s return to being a defense attorney could lead to tension in his marriage with Angela in The Rookie Season 9.
- TV Insider spoke with Shawn Ashmore and Alyssa Diaz about what to expect from their relationship and characters in Season 9.
When Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) first decided to go back to being a defense attorney in The Rookie Season 8, both he and his wife, Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), acknowledged how cops would react, that they’d feel betrayed after his time in the DA’s office. However, she also said she was all for it since their sex life had been “unreal” when they were on opposite sides.
Well, we’ll get to see what it really means for the relationship when The Rookie returns in 2027 for Season 9 because we’ll continue to see his and Sean Del Monte’s (guest star Michael Trucco) own firm.
“In the first couple episodes, we do get kind of a glimpse at what’s happening with the law firm of Evers and Del Monte,” Ashmore told TV Insider at San Diego Comic-Con.
“He’s out of the house, which is nice,” Diaz said, with Ashmore adding, “That is very important. Very important for Angela [for him] to be out of the house.” (At the end of Season 8, Wesley and Sean were working out of Wesley and Angela’s house.)

As for the couple’s dynamic, after reading the first two scripts, Ashmore shared (and Diaz agreed), “What I do know and what I love about what Alexi [Hawley, showrunner] and our writers do is that they have a nice push and pull with Wesley and Angela. And I’m excited now that Wesley’s back on as a defense attorney, some of that sort of chippiness and the sparring that happened between them, now we’re on opposite sides again of the law that hopefully we’ll get to incorporate a little bit of that into the relationship, into the marriage because it’s always fun knowing that they always come back to center and find a way through their arguments.”
Diaz also teased seeing the couple’s kids (“I know the fans really appreciate it”) as well as more of Angela and Nyla (Mekia Cox) — we always love scenes with the two of them, both on and off the job. “Harpez is back,” she said. “It’s always fun working with Mekia.”
Ashmore also suggested that, once Tim (Eric Winter), who has been kidnapped along with Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) by people working for international crime boss Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), “I think there’s maybe a moment of repair between Bradford and Wesley after their last interaction. I’m interested to see where that goes. I think that’s a nice moment.” He was referring to Tim getting angry once he learned that Wesley had joined Everett’s defense team, all part of his plan to secretly investigate the corrupt lawyer Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas).
“He’s going to forgive you,” Diaz told him. “Because I…”
“Because he’s afraid of you,” Ashmore finished. “The classic line of, ‘We accept Wesley because we fear Lopez.’”
