Explain in depth of how you went about your latest track?
I wrote Don’t Look Back shortly after the passing of my grandfather. I turned to writing as my therapy. One day after a dream I had of my grandpa smiling at me as if to let me know it was ok to let him go for now, the words just came so naturally and quickly. I found myself referencing Peter Pan, Where the Wild Things Are, and L’ombre Du Vent. When dealing with grief, you can feel guilty to move on, but we can’t stop living and experiencing life. This is what this song means to me as well as embracing the dreams we once had as children and to continue to hold on to the wonder in life.
I didn’t want the track to be sad, the words are somewhat melancholic already, we wanted this feeling of taking off like Wendy did on her flight to Never Never Land with Peter. The arrangement takes you on this journey that I hope can help others find closure as it helped me find mine.
The titled track holds some heart for you. How did you discover that?
There was a lot of internal reflection and connecting with my younger self when it comes to the lyrics. I felt my heart was already exposed and vulnerable, so I let my heart take control of the words.
How far deep do you reach emotionally while creating your music?
To the very depths of my heart. I went through all the emotions while writing. It was extremely therapeutic.
Did you want to take your time when making this music or did you just want to get it out NOW?
I took my time, more accurately we took our time with the song. Don’t Look Back is the 8th song in my concept album, Yours Always. The songs are interwoven through sounds, melodies, and lyrics that tell a story. We wrote the album to be listened to from start to finish.
Who is responsible for making this music happen overall?
This was a beautiful collaboration between myself and my producer/friend/composer, Saun Santipreecha. We worked on the songs almost simultaneously, from the very beginning we knew we wanted this to be a concept album. He and I coming from a film background, we wanted to approach this album as if we were writing a movie soundtrack.
What is the turning point for you when it’s time to perform this music LIVE?
Having to tap into those emotions again and being comfortable showing vulnerability on stage, it’s not easy but that has been something I have been coming to terms with during rehearsal.
