Teyquil Interview

You just released a new single and have a new one on the way. Tell us more about why you chose to lead with these singles in particular? How do you make that decision?

Girlz on Bikes is my current single. This is true lol! When I was creating it though, it never crossed my mind that it would be my next release. I actually had another song in mind but apparently, the Universe felt otherwise. In the midst of producing “Girlz on Bikes” the weather was just breaking and the sun became much warmer and inviting. I was feeling good, optimistic to a degree and the outside world seemed calm and welcoming. Ideas were flowing and there were girls everywhere. I saw one in particular riding her bike in my neighborhood that caught my eye and from then on, a song was born and it became my current single shortly after. The song “AWAY’ is next up to bat and this tune is the total opposite from my latest cut.

The song comes from a place involving an ex-girlfriend of mine who really did some damage during our separation. It’s been a few years now but I didn’t have anything to say about it as my heart was truly affected by the pain she caused. Now that I”m slowly healing from it, I felt it was the perfect time to share my thoughts on the matter. I make the decisions on what my next release will be solely on where I am in the present and in my life. To me, it’s like trying on an outfit or putting one together. It just has to feel right and if you’re not left guessing whether to wear that outfit or not once it’s on your body, you know, that in that moment the outfit is meant to be worn based on where you are in the present.

Are there any rules you set for yourself when you know you have to concentrate on making music?

Rules, no. I do have a process though that I adhere to and that’s just simply disconnecting from the outside world for a bit. I shut off my phone and collapse my social media platforms/windows. I also love recording in the dark hahaha. To me, it’s so calming and allows me to bare my deepest feelings and emotions when creating. Making music is vital to my soul and so therefore, everything else around comes to a pause as I put myself into the art and work for as long as it takes to perfect something I’m working on to the best of my ability.

Who are you personally listening to music-wise these days, and why?

I’m listening to Sasha Sloan a lot these days. I love her so freakin’ much. I relate to Sasha more than I’d like to admit. We both suffer from depression and her story growing up parallels a bit with mine. The loneliness, isolation, unhappiness, suicide thoughts and attempts and so on that she talks about in her songs are also themes and issues I’ve encountered as well growing up and still deal with to this day, to a degree. My sad boy anthems run alongside Sasha’s and that makes me feel less alone in this cold world.

What do you list as your biggest or best career accomplishment to date?

So far, it would have to be being nominated and winning the Audience Choice Award for my Sound Design show called “Soundscape Visualz” in the music category at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival last year in 2021! This was my very first time performing in this event that happens every year in Philadelphia.

Your most convincing reason to get new fans to check out your music and/or live shows?

I haven’t quite figured that out yet. However, I do have some ideas that could possibly sway new fans to give me a chance. Right now, I’m just utilizing my social media platforms as a way to introduce myself and my music. I love meeting people and getting to know them and what they like. That has always been fascinating to me for some reason. Honestly, this has been a learning experience for me and one that I look forward to growing towards in my time living as a musician.
