Dianña has logged numerous Adult Contemporary hits and her latest “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” is another hit on the way. Yes, it is seasonal tune, but it’s more than that. It’s the next step in a career that has seen nothing but an upward swing since she first began. Her latest two chart successes such as the most recent “Hands” and its predecessor “Calm Down Karen” this year position her as one of the brightest singing talents today. It is this sort of talent that attracted the attention of renowned producer/mixer Mark Needham.

Needham, noted for his work with such luminaries as Dolly Parton, Imagine Dragons, and Chris Isaak, gives “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” the sort of robust sound that this track deserves. Each instrument is fully represented. The piano cozies up to listeners, the drums set a definite tone and give the track unexpected gravitas, and other instrumental touches are given the same treatment. His supreme accomplishment, however, is how he captures the warmth and soul in Dianña’s voice.
She captures the song’s pathos of loss and reunion with easy, confident grace and the feeling she puts behind each line is enough to attract even the most hardened listeners. Despite it being a Christmas song, there’s no contrivance here. She began writing this song ten years ago and it was only when inspiration struck this year that she realized she wanted to record a Christmas track that “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” came roaring to life.
The song’s video can certainly stand on its own as a compelling work. Fon Davis directed the clip, filmed at Fonco Studios in Los Angeles, and it is full of the lustrous colors of the season without ever looking gaudy. The video rightly focuses its attention on Dianña during the clip and she moves throughout the video as if she has waited her whole life for a chance to try a Christmas song. It’s a venerable tradition, so who can blame her? The other performers in the clip add to its merits and the abundance of traditional Christmas imagery is another thing viewers will love.
