Jennifer Alvarado is Surging

Interview, Music

Hello Jennifer Alvarado! You have embodied really going THERE in your music. How were you able to really go THERE in your lyrics?

Thank you.  I tend to write when I am upset or challenged by a situation.  Writing is how I process events in my life and it’s also always been a safe place for me to be extremely honest.  When I think back to songs that really impacted me growing up, it came down to the vulnerability found in the lyrics.  I’ve always wanted to model that.

What do you want your music to ultimately portray?

Ultimately, I want the listener to feel like they aren’t alone.  It is why I am so open with challenges and hurts in my life.  We all have moments where we feel misunderstood and/or alone.  I think you can help more people by being honest about your personal challenges while also providing hope that you made it through and so can they.

When you are writing something with this much depth, what is your approach to the lyrics?

I want to be somewhat clear about the situation thus providing some personal details, while also keeping some elements hidden for the listener to fill in their own stories for relatability.  I tend to write a lot about relationships or create storylines around the idea of a relationship because most people can relate to the dynamics surrounding a breakup or being in love.

Connecting all the dots between the lyrics and music, which comes first?

I tend to have notebooks of random lyrics.  I like words.  I fell in love with certain songs because of their lyrics.  It could be composed of the same two chords, but if the lyrics make me think or feel something, I can listen to it all day.

Proving yourself time and time again and showcasing yourself as nothing short of TALENTED, how do you keep centered in just focusing on your music?

Again, thank you for that.  Here’s the thing…there is always someone better and more talented…I am just grateful for the opportunity to be able to do what I love.  I surround myself with truth tellers.  I want people who challenge me and make me a better person.  Yes, I want to always be better at writing, singing, performing…but I care more about growing daily as a good person and being kinder, less selfish and more like Christ.

Making more fans as you grow, what has been your most heartfelt connection to a fan?

I love meeting the little kids because I see myself at that age. I remember going to concerts and shows and just praying to be able to sing one day.  I love seeing that in their eyes and I always want to encourage the dreamers to keep going.

What is your next project?!

I am currently in the studio working on some holiday music and finishing the second part of my Songbird project…we are aiming for late Winter:)

Leave us with a chance to continue to follow you! Thank you for being YOU!
