Trisha & Thara have a lot on their plate and show no signs of not being able to handle the demands. Sisters and exceptional singers, the pair’s third single “Too Late Again” pushes past the “slow bop” of their first two songs. The new release finds them and producer Brad Young blending two key styles, pop and EDM, into a satisfying musical whole.

I hear other echoes, albeit light, in the track. Trisha and Thara are both more than capable soul singers at the moment and, as the 16 and 13 year old continue physically maturing, I expect those talents will only deepen. It will not surprise me at all, however, if the next track from these two proves to be some sort of modern soul number. The verses of “Too Late Again” recall it, without question, and the overall mood of the lyrics seems tailor-made for a R&B or soul version.

Make no mistake, however, that the pop and EDM elements dominate. This isn’t a bad thing, however. These elements in their hands take on a sparkle too many pop by the numbers tracks boast in the modern scene. It reaches its zenith during the song’s chorus as the track shifts up into another gear.

The singers follow it there with great skill. Listeners will admire how they underplay, at least a little, the song’s verses before escalating as the arrangement does. Their voices are tailor made to sing with one another and their performances here and elsewhere demonstrate rare gifts for harmonizing that few other modern acts can match.

The song isn’t your usual pop fluff in terms of its lyrical content. Trisha and Thara’s song addresses fractious emotional connections and how they can color our attitudes towards certain individuals. It’s unusually complex material for such young performers to tackle, but the sisters provide a more than capable interpretation of the song. I am especially taken with the depth of feeling they invest in every line.

It thankfully lacks any pretense. You can hear little affectations scattered throughout the song but they never cross the line into cheap gimmickry and, instead, merely add further color. “Too Late Again” has a title conveying head-shaking disappointment but the music cuts against that. It has more layers than some may be accustomed to in a pop song and its assorted shades give it a fullness you can appreciate more than once.

Newcomers will likely come away as instant fans while those familiar with the duo’s earlier singles will be thrilled by what they hear. Their willingness to break new ground so early on bodes well for them and there’s no sign at all they’ll forget the fundamentals they’ve so clearly mastered. Trisha & Thara’s rise is the sort of story that restores at least a modicum of faith that the cream, indeed, rises to the top and the music world still has great outcomes for young men and women seduced by its promise. Promise is something these two have plenty of.
