India Now Has a ‘Digital Tourism Stack.’ Can it Fix a Fragmented Market?

India wants to make it easier for travelers to find and book beyond the country’s biggest hotels, attractions, and tour operators.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) this week launched the National Digital Tourism Stack, designed to connect homestays, guides, attractions, experiences, transport providers, and other tourism businesses.

The government has planned the omplementation in phases, with a pilot in January 2027 and a wider rollout from July 2027.

If implemented correctly, it could be particularly useful for a country like India, where much of the tourism supply remains fragmented. While major hotels, airlines and attractions have sophisticated online distribution, thousands of smaller businesses and locally run experiences still operate through a patchwork of websites, social media, offline bookings, and intermediaries.
