What To Know
- Season 2 of CIA will see Colin trying to forget about his former partner, Toni, who turned out to be dirty, and Bill making a shocking discovery.
- Showrunner Mike Weiss teases what that means for both.
If it were up to Colin (Tom Ellis), he’d never even hear the name Toni again. But this is TV, and so of course Angela Sarafyan‘s character remains in the fold in CIA Season 2, premiering on Monday, October 5. But after his former partner faked her own death and turned out to be dirty, just because she can be used as an asset (and that’s something Colin can understand) doesn’t mean he’s going to like it. It also means that it should be particularly interesting to see what that does to Colin’s relationship with his boss, Nikki (Necar Zadegan), given their history, once he finds out she’s using Toni.
“We wanted to challenge that, right? Nikki is close with Colin, but she also has a relationship with Toni, and she wants what’s best for Toni. There’s a lot of people in Langley that want to see Toni gone, that would like to see Toni probably taken to a black site and interrogated for everything that she knows about what she did when she went off the reservation as an intelligence officer,” showrunner Mike Weiss tells TV Insider.

“We had an opportunity to challenge these relationships and strengthen them in the end,” he continues. “But the only way you strengthen a relationship is to challenge it and force the two or three people, in this case, who are in that relationship, to ask some tough questions of themselves and of each other. And so yeah, they don’t always have to be happy with the decisions that their superiors are making. It makes for good TV.”
Unfortunately for Colin, he’s only going to be able to pretend Toni doesn’t exist “for so long,” Weiss admits. “Toni is also, at the same time, desperate to prove to Colin that she’s still the woman that he fell in love with. ‘Is he ever going to be able to see her like that?’ is the question.”
Just as Colin’s dealing with this, his current partner, Bill (Nick Gehlfuss), is going to have his plate full, too. He’s returning after his father’s death, and in the premiere, he’s going to make a shocking discovery. Colin will be part of that arc, after last season saw the two mostly working separately on the mole hunt (until near the end). “We’re really excited about telling the story and expanding our understanding of who Bill is and getting him to question what does make him tick,” says Weiss.
