How SingleThread Is Growing Without Copying Itself

The Selvedge in Healdsburg and SoNoMa in Kyoto point to a different model for luxury expansion: transfer the culture, not the concept.

When I visited SoNoMa by SingleThread inside Capella Kyoto earlier this year, the proposition — a Northern California restaurant refracted back through Kyoto — could easily have landed as imported culinary theater. 

Instead, it felt specific, assured, and importantly, wildly creative. The team understood California, but also the Japanese roots that have long run through the source code of SingleThread. It was not a replica of Healdsburg, but rather it was an elegant translation.

That distinction matters because, as I have long written, luxury hospitality is in a flag-planting mood. Successful brands are being pushed into new cities and formats until their most distinctive qualities become reduced to visual codes and service scripts lost in the sauce of operations.
