What To Know

  • The White House attempted to join #SpongeBobDay by posting a meme of SpongeBob wearing a MAGA hat.
  • Fans mocked and criticized the post, noting that SpongeBob’s values contradict MAGA messaging.
  • This incident follows previous instances where Trump used SpongeBob memes for political commentary.

The White House social media team tried to get in on the SpongeBob SquarePants Day celebrations on Tuesday (July 14) with its own MAGA-flavored meme, only to be mercilessly mocked by fans.

After Nickelodeon marked #SpongeBobDay on X, the official White House account responded with its own post, showing an edited image of SpongeBob from the Season 3 episode “One Krabs Cash.” In the White House version, the iconic cartoon character is wearing the famous soda-drink hat, which has President Trump‘s “MAGA” slogan printed across the front.

Fans quickly flooded the post with criticism, sharing their own SpongeBob memes in retaliation. One post showed a dumpster full of MAGA hats, while another changed the slogan to read, “F*** MAGA.”

Another fan replied, “SpongeBob’s entire personality is kindness, empathy, inclusion, protecting the environment, and helping complete strangers. That’s a pretty tough character to turn into a MAGA mascot.”

“He would NEVER,” wrote another.

One commenter pointed out that the White House basically insulted itself, explaining, “The joke of the episode was that those hats were stupid and worthless.”

“Do not deface the Bob like this ever again or they’ll be consequences,” said another.

“Omg they watermarked it lmfao,” another added, noting how the White House put its own logo at the bottom of the pic.

“Get your filthy hands off the bob,” said one fan.

Another added, “Oh yall done gone too God damn far now.”

SpongeBob Squarepants was created by the late marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series officially premiered on July 17, 1999, and has run for 17 seasons, as well as produced several spinoff series, movies, and merchandise. It is also one of the most memed cartoons in internet history.

This isn’t the first time the president has used a SpongeBob meme. In February 2025, Trump posted a SpongeBob image mocking federal employees following reports that the workforce had been asked to document their achievements from the past week.

The meme the president posted on Truth Social showed the titular character looking at a notepad titled ‘Got Done Last Week,’ which included items such as ‘Cried about Trump,’ ‘Cried about Elon,’ ‘Read some emails,’ etc.
