NBC‘s Angie Lassman filled in for one of Today‘s biggest hosts despite being in recovery from a major injury.

The meteorologist took over weather reporting duties for Al Roker during Today‘s Wednesday, July 8, episode, as the weatherman has the entire week off. Lassman was filmed from the chest up while giving her weather reports before opening up about her injury while greeting fans on 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

“We’ve got another fantastic crowd joining us here on the plaza, along with Angie Lassman and Angie’s new friend: her scooter,” Craig Melvin said to viewers. “Angie’s on the mend. Tell folks what happened.”

Lassman joked, “I didn’t think I had enough accessories, so I decided that I would have one that’s very obvious.” She went on to reveal that she tore her Achilles while playing tennis.

“Did that hurt terribly?” Jenna Bush Hager asked, to which Lassman replied, “It hurt, and what hurts more is trying to get around New York City on a scooter.”

Kaylee Hartung, who was filling in for Carson Daly, praised Lassman for being “nimble” on the scooter despite her clunky boot. Bush Hager was surprised that Lassman sported a heel on her non-injured foot. “Dedication, guys. Dedication,” Lassman quipped.

The hosts ended the outdoor segment with more well-wishes for Lassman. “We appreciate you,” Melvin stated, while Sheinelle Jones said, “Hang in there. You’re such a good sport.”

While Lassman has filled in for hosts on Today a handful of times, she is best known as the weather anchor on the show’s Saturday edition, Weekend Today. Lassman first unveiled her injury on the show’s May 30 episode.

“I’m okay, guys. I did rupture my Achilles on Memorial Day. It wasn’t the start of summer that I really wanted, but I’m making the most of it,” she shared at the time. “I’m a little immobile right now, and that’s making me stir crazy. But all things considered, I’m doing pretty good. I’m just stuck at home a lot.”

Lassman said she planned to improve at tennis this summer, but her injury put a pause on her progress. “I just shifted my weight a little bit, and I immediately knew, guys. I heard the pop, I felt the horrible pain, and I immediately knew at that point that my summer plans were all canceled and that I needed to go to the emergency room.”

Noting that her recovery will be “extremely long,” she continued, “I had surgery on Tuesday, and for a week, I have to have a cast on. … And then, beyond that, I am in a boot for, essentially, up to four months without putting any weight on my foot. So, it’s crutches and a scooter for the prolonged period. And really, you don’t have a full recovery for nine to 12 months.”

At the time, Lassman said she was staying optimistic despite her injured leg. “I’m gonna make the most of it. I’m gonna try and not go crazy by being stuck at home all summer long, and it’s gonna be fine,” she stated. “There are worse problems to have in life. My Achilles is on the mend, and I’m happy about that.”
