What To Know
- Best Medicine‘s Season 1 finale left off with Louisa wanting to be a mother and her ex-fiancé making her a surprising offer.
- Louisa’s decision will be revealed when Season 2 picks up months later.
The love triangle of Best Medicine got very complicated at the end of its first season — and not just because it’s expanded to a square. When the series began and Martin (Josh Charles) moved to Port Wenn, the doctor and schoolteacher Louisa (Abigail Spencer) quickly became enamored with each other. But she was still dealing with the aftermath of her breakup with the town sheriff, Mark (Josh Segarra). Then, Martin’s ex-girlfriend, who also happens to be Louisa’s fertility doctor, Eden (Eliza Coupe), came to town in the finale. And now, heading into Season 2, thanks to the classic “character overhears only part of a conversation,” those dynamics have become messy.
Just as Martin was ready to confess how he truly feels to Louisa, Mark had approached her about having a baby together — but just as friends. We don’t get her answer, but Martin, only privy to part of that, headed home and called over Eden. It sets up some juicy material for Season 2, which is part of Fox’s fall lineup.
As was pointed out to Louisa and Mark previously, they are a great team and would’ve made great parents. That was also on their minds, according to both executive producer Liz Tuccillo and Spencer.
For now, however, Louisa’s “just absolutely stunned because it’s the last thing she was thinking,” Tuccillo told TV Insider after the finale.
But Mark’s offer was “a beautiful” one “of friendship and very selfless,” said Spencer, who noted that Louisa has to also be considering her feelings for Martin. “And then in Episode 11, the plague episode, George [Jason Veasey] makes that offer to Louisa of like, ‘Look, if you want to have a baby, we’re here for you.’ So I’m very curious to kind of see her go through this journey, and also what an interesting kind of very current feeling to see a woman want to decide to have a baby outside of a relationship.”
The Season 2 premiere will pick up five months later, at which point viewers will learn of Louisa’s decision.
There are certainly a few ways this could go. Louisa could say yes, and when Season 2 picks up, she and Mark are in the process of trying to have a baby together (cue sure-to-be hilarious scenes of the two of them with Eden). They could be successful, and then we get to see what them co-parenting, with input from the entire town, is like with the addition of the continued slow burn between Louisa and Martin. Or, despite their efforts, it doesn’t work out and, after a failed attempt at IVF, one of them changes their mind. (That could also happen after Louisa initially says yes, before they move forward with the process.)
Louisa could also decide that it would get too complicated and look elsewhere for a sperm donor, whether it be George, Greg (Stephen Spinella), someone else in town, or someone anonymous. Or, and perhaps the least likely, something could happen between Louisa and Martin and she ends up pregnant — either after they’ve discussed their relationship and its future or before.
