After four weeks helming the Cornelia Marie, Jake and his crew have endured freezing waters from an arctic storm that brought in up to 30-foot seas and gusts reaching 60 knots. Not the best conditions when a 170,000 pounds of bairdi carb needed to be caught. Jake predicted hell for the team as he worked to keep the boat stable as swells swallowed up the deck. The crew needed to keep their head on a swivel. Jake felt he needed his good luck charm for this situation. He held his gold chain gifted to him by Phil 20 years ago. He rarely wore it until there were occasions such as this where he needed a boost. Big hauls came in, only it included opilio. It was illegal to harvest different species of crab or face thousands of dollars in fines. The scrappy underdog bet on 140 pots to deliver the remaining 60,000 pounds needed before offload. His move to steer south led to the motherload. Phil must have been looking down on him after all.

The clock was ticking on the 72 hours before an offload of 300,000 pounds of golden king crab. His Time Bandit faced bad weather as Jake. He looked to protect the crew from Mother Nature the best he could as they worked to set pots. Johnathan directed the crew when to drop gear and when to hide until the threat of a big wave passes. With crab numbers picking up, Johnathan didn’t have much time to celebrate before an alarm sounded. Smoke began to fill the air with Johnathan’s brother Neal, the engineer, discovering an exhaust leak. They had to fix this problem quickly before carbon monoxide caused massive problems like nausea, shortness of breath, or even respiratory cardiac failure.  Neal was able to MacGyver a temporary to seal the leak allowing them to continue their fishing efforts.

When Monte took over The Wizard, he had no idea he’d have to clean up his brother Keith’s mess. He found out Keith set 50 baited pots in a 10,000 square mile restricted zone. The repercussions could be severe. Monte sought advice and not the news he was hoping to hear. He was left with no choice but to pull the pots and release the crab or risk them being confiscated.

Forfeiting $16,000 worth of crab also cost them two precious days of production and thousands of dollars in fuel. It was heartbreaking for Monte and the crew to see the pots full of crab only to have to dump them back over the rail. Monte was undeterred by the initial setback and was driven to make up for it by putting together a plan to make the 350,000 pounds needed to make quota.
