Could there be another super champion on the way? Jeopardy! champion Chris D’Angelo is on his way to becoming one, starting with striving for his eighth win and $200,000.
D’Angelo, from Washington, D.C., would need to win 10 games to be considered a super champ. The content manager entered game eight with a seven-day total of $174,201, after winning $50,000 during one game.
On May 29, he played against Matt Patrick, from Bloomfield, New Jersey, and Lili Driggs, from New York, New York. Warning: Spoilers for the May 29 episode of Jeopardy! ahead!
D’Angelo had the lead after the first 15 clues with $5,200. His opponents were way behind him. During the interviews, the game show champion shared that his and his wife’s honeymoon to Tokyo never happened, since they got married in 2020, so he will splurge and take her on the trip now.
He found the Daily Double on clue 18. D’Angelo had $6,600 and wagered $1,000 in “1- Syllable Science.” The clue read, “You might say we have this chemical element to thank for the Bronze Age, since the Bronze Agers couldn’t make bronze without it.” “What is tin?” he answered correctly, giving him $7,600.
By the end of the round, D’Angelo had $11,000. Driggs, a banker, was in second place with $400. Patrick, a nonprofit program manager, had -$600.
The beginning of Double Jeopardy was filled with a few Triple Stumpers, but D’Angelo was still in the lead. He had $14,600 when he found the first DD on clue 10.
He wagered $4,000 in “Underground.” The clue was: “Troglofauna, a word new to Jeopardy!, includes a species discovered in 2020 of this arthropod, with one specimen having 1,306 legs.”
“What is a millipede?” he answered correctly. This gave him $18,600.
He found the last DD on clue 26. D’Angelo had $20,200 and wagered $4,800. In “‘El’ on Earth,” the clue read, “A name associated with a place of great wealth… this county includes South Lake Tahoe & Grizzly Flats.”
D’Angelo didn’t give an answer, so he dropped down to $15,400. The correct response was “El Dorado County.”
The champion finished with $16,200. Patrick moved to second place with $5,800. Driggs had $4,400.
“Exercise” was the Final Jeopardy category. The clue was: “A WWI internee created this form of exercise, adapting hospital beds as makeshift equipment to rehab injured soldiers.”
Driggs had “What is calisthetics?” but then crossed it out and wrote, “What is Pilates?” Luckily, she did because Pilates was correct. She wagered $2,000, giving her $6,400.
Patrick had the incorrect response of “What is isometrics?” He wagered $3,005, giving him a total of $2,795.
D’Angelo also had the correct response of “Pilates.” He wagered $3,800, making his total $20,000. This made his eight-day total $194,201, just shy of $200,000. But that’s OK because he can try to surpass that in his ninth game on June 1.
