SCARECROW is a hard rock band founded in 1989 by writer, producer, and lead vocalist John Blaze, whose gritty vocals and theatrical vision helped define the band’s unmistakable sound and image. Emerging during the final surge of the late-’80s hard rock era, SCARECROW quickly built a reputation for explosive live performances and a dramatic stage presence that fused raw rock power with dark, cinematic storytelling.
The original lineup featured Jim Harris on drums, Rickie Panzica, also known as Rick Anthony, on bass, and Eddie Ojeda of Twisted Sister on guitar. Right out of the gate, Blaze’s raspy, aggressive vocal style became a defining force behind the band’s identity, pairing perfectly with the crushing instrumentation and helping SCARECROW stand apart from the pack.
The Early Years
SCARECROW made its live debut in September 1989 at the legendary Sundance nightclub on Long Island, where the band immediately made an impact. The performance sparked buzz almost overnight, drawing in audiences with its power, energy, and edge. Frank Cariola, owner of the venue, became one of the band’s earliest champions, recognizing their potential and helping fuel momentum around their growing live following.
Throughout the early 1990s, SCARECROW recorded and toured extensively, steadily building a devoted fan base. The band eventually signed with Redlight Records in Illinois and released its debut album, a hard-hitting collection of songs produced by Blaze himself. The release gained attention both in the United States and overseas, reaching international listeners as far away as Japan.
Evolution and Lineup Changes
Like many bands that lived through the rapidly shifting rock landscape of the 1990s, SCARECROW experienced its share of lineup changes. Guitarist Jimmy Quinn joined the group, adding a second guitar and helping expand the band’s sound. Later, drummer Bobby Marks, known for his work with Humble Pie, became part of the lineup. Around that same period, Eddie Ojeda returned to the spotlight with Twisted Sister, while SCARECROW continued to evolve and press forward with Quinn on guitar.
Even through those transitions, the band never lost sight of its core identity. SCARECROW remained committed to recording, performing, and refining its hard rock sound while holding onto the dramatic intensity that first put the band on the map.

A Theatrical Reinvention
In the 2020s, John Blaze took the SCARECROW concept to another level by expanding it beyond music and into theater. The result was I AM SCARECROW, a stage production that blended storytelling, music, and Blaze’s signature stage makeup into a darker, more immersive expression of the SCARECROW persona.
To celebrate the band’s enduring legacy, Blaze also released Best of SCARECROW, a compilation album marking two decades of music. The collection featured performances from notable musicians including guitarist George Cintron, drummer John Miceli, and bassist Danny Miranda, who has performed with Queen alongside Brian May and Paul Rodgers.
The New Era: “Twisted”
In 2026, SCARECROW entered a bold new chapter with the release of “Twisted,” one of the most ambitious tracks of John Blaze’s career. Inspired by Blaze’s longtime friendship with Dee Snider and the legacy of Twisted Sister, the single delivers a modern, radio-ready hard rock sound while staying true to the band’s heavy roots and theatrical spirit.
“Twisted” features Dee Snider on guest vocals during the explosive second verse and chorus, bringing even more firepower to the track. The song also includes violin by Mark Wood of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, lead guitar by TJ Jordan, and drums by Bobby Marks. With its powerhouse lineup and anthemic sound, “Twisted” stands as both a tribute to hard rock’s past and a statement that SCARECROW is still charging ahead with something to say.
The single is available now on major streaming platforms, including Spotify and iTunes, with a music video planned to support live performances throughout 2026.
