Vienna CC’ s recent spate of singles has produced some of the most unique music in modern pop today. His songwriting frame of reference extends into classical music and, of course, touches on some familiar modern names such as Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple, among others. His latest single “Here Comes the Attraction” doesn’t necessarily reflect such influences directly, but they are there if you listen past the superficial surface. He’s clearly a songwriter well-versed in crafting hard-hitting and melodically memorable tracks.

The latter quality is where his ideas are born. Vienna CC builds each of his songs around a central melodic idea that is rarely outright direct but, instead, develops over the course of the song. He couples such an idea to a pulsing backbeat in the case of “Here Comes the Attraction” and it wrestles with listeners from the beginning, demanding your attention. The slightly uptempo pace is a good choice; anything slower would undercut the song’s potential while a faster beat would rush it and lose opportunities.

He’s making a statement with the song’s lyrics and taking on one of the oldest topics in art – the allure between men and women. “Here Comes the Attraction” looks at how that allure manifests itself with its own language, culled from everyday speech, and a singular perspective on seeing things. His obvious intelligence burns in every line. He doesn’t allow the subject to run away from him, however, as each of those lines is tailored to serve the song rather than stand on their own. Vienna CC is never too wordy. His command of English is strong, as well, and it helps broaden the song’s appeal.

The production has a low-fi quality without ever compromising the experience. Vienna CC’s “Here Comes the Attraction” has a raw and unbridled quality as if he cut the song in a sudden fit of inspiration and it emerges now with few if any changes. Each instrument is well-represented in the mix and his voice has a primacy in the piece that it deserves. There are, perhaps, too many effects applied to his voice – it would have been interesting to hear the song with a clean vocal.

It is a small quibble. Vienna CC continues writing and recording work that goes far beyond the purview of typical pop into something much more personal while still equally appealing. There’s something very “writerly” about his perspective that seems to take in a whole world and then condense it down into a manageable length that listeners can easily understand. I expect this gift will continue developing over time.

“Here Comes the Attraction” shows he’s well on his way to even greater accomplishments. The brief but enticing track packs quite a wallop in its short running time and invites listeners to hear it again. This song holds up; it isn’t an one and done endeavor. Vienna CC may work out of a home studio, but he has his eyes set on bigger things and you hear that in each second of “Here Comes the Attraction”.
