To be clear, The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 isn’t an EP of film scores, it is music on another level. With tracks like “The Defiant Ones” and “Situation on Avenue B” you can’t help but feel like Redband and his team made you a personal set of scores to live your life to. Each track is jam packed with multiple musical influences that converge into something entirely new. There is something about the arrangement of the music, how it flows from one genre to the next, that causes your mind to start telling a story. It truly feels like you are interacting with the music as you listen.
The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 offers listeners songs that become extremely personal. Since there are no lyrics, this gives listeners an opportunity to draw on their own memories, creativity, or experiences. It makes every song unique to each person, no one is going to see the same movie in their head or feel the same way when they listen to this EP. Out of all the tracks on The Synaesthetic Picture Show, Now Playing Part 4 “Situation on Avenue B” left me speechless. This track seems to have a story built into the very structure of the song. “Situation on Avenue B” changes and manipulates tone more than a Coen Brothers movie. The beginning of the track is upbeat, then about 17 seconds in, something happens. The beat speeds up, the mood of the track shifts to something almost panic inducing. I suddenly feel like I’ve seen something I wasn’t supposed to and have to rush across town in a muscle car to warn someone. I felt completely different at the end of my first listen, it transported me to a movie of my own making instantly.
