January 7, 2025 marked a new milestone in horror history, with the release of Brandon A. Salisbury’s much anticipated “George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.” This highly anticipated film explores the legendary filmmaker George A. Romero’s unfulfilled journey to adapt the iconic Resident Evil video game into a feature film.
Known as the godfather of the zombie genre, Romero redefined horror cinema with his 1968 classic, Night of the Living Dead. Thirty years later, he was tapped to bring Capcom’s groundbreaking survival horror game Resident Evil to the big screen. Despite the potential for an incredible collaboration between Romero and the Capcom team, Romero’s vision was never realized, leaving fans with only questions and speculation—until now.
“George A. Romero’s Resident Evil” intricately explores the incredible story of this unmade film, shedding light and new details on the film itself, the challenges Romero faced, and the lead up to his eventual removal from the project. Through exclusive interviews with key figures such as Kenichi Iwao, the original game’s writer; George Demick, Romero’s collaborator; and Charlie Kraslavsky, who portrayed Chris Redfield, the documentary offers a comprehensive look at what could have been a genre-defining cinematic experience.
Adding to its authenticity, the film features contributions from Ben Rubin, curator of the George A. Romero Archives, and Alex Aniel, author of Itchy, Tasty: The Unofficial History of Resident Evil. Narrated by Pablo Kuntz, the original voice of the infamous Albert Wesker, the documentary provides an immersive journey into Romero’s creative struggles and triumphs.
“George A. Romero’s Resident Evil” is more than a behind-the-scenes exposé—it’s a tribute to a visionary director whose influence continues to shape the landscape of horror. This documentary offers fans a glimpse into the ambitious project that never was, while celebrating the enduring legacy of George A. Romero and his impact on the Resident Evil franchise.
