Proving once again that efforts to stop people from reading are not only morally wrong, but also, usually, ineffective: days after an attacker wounded Salman Rushdie onstage during an appearance at the Chautauqua Institution in New York, his books are at the top of several online bestseller lists.
The Satanic Verses—the book that brought a fatwa from former supreme leader of Iran Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who called for Rushdie to be killed—landed at the top of several Amazon bestseller lists over the weekend. It was #1 in Literary Satire Fiction and Contemporary British & Irish Literature and #27 in the general Best Sellers list.
Meanwhile, Midnight’s Children was at the top of Asia Myth & Legend and Joseph Anton: A Memoir was #1 in Religious Intolerance. All three books, meanwhile, are on backorder on Bookshop.org.
