Without much competition standing in its way, Warner Bros. animated epic DC League of Super-Pets soared to the top spot at the domestic box office, earning a solid $23 million in its opening frame, per Deadline. That number is on par with Universal/DreamWorks Animations’ The Bad Guys, which hauled in $23.95 million and went on to earn just under $100 million.
Audiences dig Super-Pets, awarding the adventure featuring the voices of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart an A- CinemaScore, which should help its long-term results. With nothing for families until Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in September, it should be fairly smooth sailing for Super-Pets going forward.

Elsewhere, B.J. Novak’s murder mystery comedy Vengeance took in $1.75 million from 998 theaters, while last week’s champ, Jordan Peele’s Nope, held firm with an $18.55 million second weekend (-58%) bringing its domestic total to $80.6 million.
The big news, however, is that Universal/Illumination’s Minions became the first animated film to cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office in the Covid era, which is quite the feat. To date, the title has earned a whopping $320 million stateside and $710 million worldwide. Plus, you know, all that merchandising has got to total millions more for the studio.
Top Gun: Maverick also continued its astonishing run. The Tom Cruise epic took in another $8.2 million domestically, raising its total to $650.1 million. Abroad, the action adventure has soared to $671 million, meaning the Jerry Bruckheimer produced pic has reached $1.321B worldwide. Maverick should soar past Jurassic World ($653 million) this week, and might surpass Titanic ($659 million) by the weekend on the all-time domestic chart. Whether it catches Avengers: Infinity War ($678 million) and Black Panther ($700 million) remains to be seen.

Worldwide, Maverick sits just below The Last Jedi ($1.332 billion) at No. 16 on the all-time earner list but may have enough juice to cruise past Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($1.342 billion) and Black Panther ($1.347 billion). Though, the odds of Cruise catching Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.402 billion) appear slim.
