The Suicide Squad Tops Domestic Box Office, Jungle Cruise Holds Strong

Film

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad didn’t exactly light the box office in its first weekend with just $26.5 million from 4,002 theaters, per Deadline. Of course, it also released simultaneously on HBO Max, so there was no need to see it in theaters.

It wasn’t all bad news at the box office as Jungle Cruise dipped a respectable 55% in its second weekend to bring in $15.69 million, raising its domestic total to $65.3 million.

Other holdovers include M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, which collected $4.1M for a $38.5M total. The thriller only cost $18 million, so, while the numbers aren’t mind-boggling, at least the pic is making money. Black Widow came in at No. 4 with $4 million for a $174.3 million total, while Space Jam 2 ($2.475M/$65.6M total) and Snake Eyes ($1.65M/$26M) continued their lackluster box office runs.

Surprisingly, the best holdover this weekend was the Matt Damon flick Stillwater, which dropped 45% in its second weekend and earned $2.86 million to bring its haul to $10 million, respectively.
