Life Is Strange: True Colors Gameplay Revealed

Square Enix didn’t take long to get into some Life Is Strange news, as it revealed both some Life Is Strange: True Colors gameplay as well as a better look at the remastered collection that includes the first title and Before the Storm. True Colors is still coming out on September 10, 2021 on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Stadia while the remaster is being released a few weeks later on September 30, 2021 on the same platforms (but won’t have native PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions).

The True Colors gameplay trailer gives more insight on Alex’s powers. She is an empath, meaning she is in tune with what others are feeling. She can use this to her advantage, reading people brightly colored auras, like those in the above picture. These insights open up more dialogue options, but can also make life a little harder since one choice shows how she can tell one character’s partner of their infidelity or let it slide. Game Director Zak Garriss described her powers as “integral to the story” and it impacts “every relationship she builds and every decision she makes.”

When someone has a “particularly strong aura,” Alex can reach out and cause a “nova,” which changes the surrounding world to reflect that person. Some were teased in the trailer and seem to open up even more tough dilemmas for the player.

Square also gave a more detailed look at the Life Is Strange: Remastered Collection (although the trailer leaked beforehand). This bundle of the first game and its spin-off prequel Before the Storm have gotten a visual overhaul. Characters and environments have been touched up and the first game will now have better animation, featuring full facial mocap. That first title was derided for its rudimentary animation, after all. There will also be “updated and refined gameplay puzzles,” but those changes are still under wraps. Those who pre-order the ultimate edition of True Colors for $80 will also get the remaster, which will be $40 on its own, too.
