Raya and Avatar Stay Atop Domestic and International Box Office

According to Deadline, Raya and the last Dragon retained its box office crown with $5.2M (-9%) in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $23.4M and its worldwide total to $71.2M globally. Not great, but not terrible either. At the very least, Disney’s latest was the movie of choice for LA moviegoers who shelled out $1.05M on the pic in the wake of theater re-openings in the area.

The Benedict Cumberbatch Cold War thriller The Courier landed in third place with $2M from 1,433 theaters thanks to strong reviews (84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid exit scores from fans who see the film as Cumberbatch’s bid to play James Bond.

Otherwise, it was the Oscar nominees that saw some nice earnings over the weekend. The Father earned $321K in its fourth weekend ($1.4M total), enough to keep it in the Top 10, while Warner Bros.’ Judas and the Black Messiah took in $250K from 951 locations to bring its running total to $5M.

INTERNATIONAL

The big news at the international box office was the continued success of James Cameron’s Avatar, which collected another $14.1M from China and pushing it re-release total to $44M after two weeks. Avatar can now boast the title of “Biggest Re-Release in the COVID Era” as it easily surpassed the $30M attained by Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone in August. All told, Cameron’s mega hit stands at $2,073.2M internationally and $2.833.7M globally. Anyone who thinks Avatar 2 is doomed simply isn’t paying attention.

IMAX

This weekend, the box office on the Imax global network was up 1500% over the same weekend last year as James Cameron’s Avatar delivered another $4.1M in China this weekend, pushing the Imax re-release cume to $13.1M, with the Imax China network continuing to account for 30% of nationwide box office from only 1% of screens. The lifetime Imax global cume for Avatar rises to $256M, the only title in Imax history to surpass $250m at the box office.

After an excruciatingly long wait, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet finally opened in Los Angeles this weekend, playing in eight locations in Southern California, while continuing its NYC run that started last weekend. 11 Imax screens in total contributed $55K over the weekend. Five of eight southern California Imax screens sold out Friday night at 25% capacity, including AMC Century City, Burbank, Universal City, Norwalk, and Ontario Mills.
