The UK government is preparing industry-wide talks on hotel safety, a government source told Skift.
The source said that the government is “firming up” plans for ministers to host a round table “with all relevant government departments and industry to figure out what’s needed, whether that be regulation, guidance or potentially legislation.”
The meeting will be organised as a direct response to a recent criminal trial growing out of Travelodge staff providing a keycard to a man who went on to sexually assault a guest, the source said.
A UK Government spokesperson would not confirm or deny plans for the meeting, but told Skift:
“This was a deeply distressing incident and our thoughts are with the victim. The Government expects all hotels and accommodation providers to have robust safeguards in place to protect guests, and we welcome Travelodge’s commitment to review and strengthen its room-access procedures.”
