Here are the 25 best metal albums of 2000.

It was the dawn of not just a new century, but a new metal millennium. After a bumpy decade for heavy metal on the whole, a resurgence for the genre’s veteran acts as well as relative newcomers who began making a name for themselves at the tail end of the ’90s.

Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith returned to Iron Maiden. The “Metal God” Rob Halford even crashed the millennium’s gates with a return-to-form after an experimental few years with Fight and 2wo.

In extreme metal, In Flames were blazing their own new path, Nile began to take shape as the Egyptian-themed death metal force we’ve known them as since and vocalist Angela Gossow made her debut with Arch Enemy.

Black metal and power metal held their own as well with some landmark titles in 2000.

It was, sadly, the year Pantera delivered their final album as well — it’s quite underrated!
