The executor of O.J. Simpson’s estate has revealed the cause of death for the late football star.

Malcolm LaVergne told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that Simpson died on April 10 after a battle with metastatic prostate cancer.

Simpson first announced he had cancer in May 2023. Though he shared some health updates on social media, the specific diagnosis was not previously made public.

Simpson’s family on April 11 first revealed that O.J. Simpson had died on X, formerly Twitter, but was not specific about the type of cancer that ultimately claimed his life.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. -The Simpson Family,” their death announcement indicated.

LaVergne represented Simpson from 2009 until his death earlier this month.

Simpson’s passing followed a life marked by success in sports and Hollywood that morphed into the athlete becoming a suspected murderer and convicted armed robber.

The former Hall of Fame football star became an actor before becoming most known for being accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, amid the high-profile case famously dubbed the Trial of the Century, in which he was ultimately acquitted of murder charges. Simpson always maintained his innocence, and the double murder of Goldman and Brown Simpson remains unsolved.

When speaking shortly after Simpson’s death to THR, LaVergne said he will ensure that any claim made from the parents of Goldman to retrieve the millions they were awarded in a 1998 civil judgment against Simpson will be accepted by the estate, and that he plans to be “hypertransparent” with the families of both Brown Simpson and Goldman.

In 2022, Fred Goldman told THR that he has not seen any money from Simpson following the judgment in the 1997 civil trial verdict — the total of which he said is raised by 10 percent each year. Tens of millions are owed to the Goldmans and Browns.
