Evil Dead Rise Sequel: Director Shares 4 Sequel Ideas

Although the latest entry in the Evil Dead franchise has only been out for a few days, director Lee Cronin said he already has plenty of Evil Dead Rise sequel ideas for a follow-up should he be given the green light to make one.

Speaking to Variety, Cronin revealed that not only does he have an idea for an Evil Dead Rise sequel in mind, but he has four different routes he thinks he could pick from when it comes to doing a new movie.

“I certainly do,” said Cronin on if he has ideas for an Evil Dead Rise sequel. “I didn’t want to bait it for sequels necessarily, even though the ending could be interpreted that way. But the ending for me was closing the loop back to the beginning. The way the story is told, I’ve got four places I’d like to look at in terms of where to go… I’m excited for the potential of what could be next and and really hope that I can be involved in in future chapters.”

According to Cronin, his four ideas for sequels all spawn off of different things that appear in the film. The first is the story behind the infamous Book of the Dead, the object that has appeared in every Evil Dead film and is usually the catalyst for the Deadites appearing. “We have history in this film and that’s presented through the vinyl. So there’s there’s a story to be told there. It’s not by accident,” said Cronin on that idea.

Another idea is to see the surviving character in Evil Dead Rise going on future adventures. “Somebody that survives picks up the chainsaw at the end and where they might go,” Cronin said.

Cronin’s third idea focuses on the apartment building that Evil Dead Rise takes place in. According to Cronin, “There’s also the aftermath in this building and who encounters that. And I’ve often thought, ‘What happens when the cleanup crew shows up?’”

Finally, Cronin’s last idea for a sequel would take things back to the woods, where Evil Dead films are more traditionally held. “Because of the opening and the closing, there’s that continuation of how this evil has a gate,” said Cronin. “That brings us back into that forest context, which excites me because I love that I broke the mold, but wouldn’t it be fun now if I went back to the cabin in the woods. It could be a cool journey.”

While it remains to be seen if Evil Dead Rise will get a sequel, Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell did note earlier this month that he and Sam and Ivan Raimi were planning on the possibility of more films releasing “every two or three years” if Rise is a success.

Evil Dead Rise is now available to watch in theaters.
