The BBC and A24 are teaming up to adapt Douglas Stuart’s Booker Prize-winning novel Shuggie Bain as a TV series.
Douglas himself will script the show, which will be produced by A24 for BBC One.
Shuggie Bain, Douglas’ debut novel, has been something of a critical and commercial phenomenon since its publication in 2020, selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide and receiving rave reviews from outlets like the New York Times, the Guardian, the New York Review of Books, and Bookforum.
Based on Stuart’s own childhood in impoverished Thatcher-era Glasgow, Shuggie Bain is the story of the loving but damaged relationship between a young boy and his alcoholic mother.
“I am deeply grateful to the BBC and A24 for their belief in Shuggie Bain,” Stuart said of the annoucnement. “I’m thrilled to bring the Bain family to the screen and the opportunity to expand on my novel and to bring new threads to the story, exploring hardships and struggles as well as the compassion, humour, and resilience that is so central to the Scottish spirit.”
