Box Office Results: The Invitation Tops Lackluster Week, Rogue One Makes History

Ah, who doesn’t love late August? The dumping ground for studios before they unleash a legion of blockbuster and award hopefuls in the fall.

After a fairly successful summer, we’ve arrived at the true low point of the box office season, in which Sony’s latest horror offering, The Invitation, took the top of the domestic box office chart with a meager $7 million. According to Deadline, the cumulative gross of films this weekend was $53.7 million, or the second lowest behind the $34.9 million total the weekend of January 28-30 produced. (It makes you wonder how a direct-to-streaming flick like Prey or Samaritan might have performed without much competition.)

Otherwise, the weekend’s other new release, George Miller’s 3,000 Years of Longing, opened in 2,436 theaters to an equally paltry $2.876 million, while last week’s champ, Bullet Train, dipped by 30% in Week 4 and added another $5.6 million to its $78.2 million running total.

Surprisingly, Top Gun: Maverick fell just 20% for a 3-day $4.75 million haul in Week 14 despite releasing on digital platforms Tuesday. Domestically, the Tom Cruise legacy sequel has, ah, cruised to $691.2 million and is just $9 million away from overtaking Black Panther for the No. 5 spot on the all-time domestic box office list. Worldwide, the action flick has grossed $1.404 billion and sits at No. 12, well behind Frozen II ($1.445 billion).

Additionally, Disney rereleased Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on domestic Imax screens where the film accrued an additional $1 million. That gives the Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi adventure $105 million on the format which is enough to push the picture into the Imax all-time Top 10. Top Gun: Maverick sits at No. 11 with $104.7 million, so Star Wars may not enjoy its position for long.
