Box Office Results: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Fends Off Beast

Film

With no big new releases hitting theaters, it was up to Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to save the day and the animated Crunchyroll production came in at the lower end of expectations with $20.1 million, according to Deadline. That was enough to top the domestic box office charts.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Beast, starring Idris Elba, collected $11.57 million from 3,743 theaters, while last week’s champ, Bullet Train, hauled in another $8 million to bring its domestic total to $68.9M after three weeks in release.

Still, the big news (again) was Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick soaring past Avengers: Infinity War on the all-time domestic box office list. The legacy sequel has now accrued $683 million in the U.S. and sits roughly $20 million behind Black Panther ($700 million) for No. 5 on the Top 10 list. The action pic also surpassed Avengers: Age of Ultron to reach No. 12 on the all-time worldwide box office chart but is about $47 million behind Frozen II ($1.450 billion). To date, Maverick has accrued a massive $1.403 billion worldwide.

Also, Minions: The Rise of Gru opened in China and grossed $3.2 million on its opening day, which marks the biggest single-day debut for a Hollywood animated film during the pandemic. All told, Minions has taken in $807.7 million worldwide.
