Some news for literary art collectors, bookish home chefs, and acquisitive richies, generally: Joan Didion’s estate is headed to auction. The sale, “An American Icon: Property From the Collection of Joan Didion,” hosted by Stair Galleries, will take place on November 16, and will include Didion’s fine art collection as well as furniture, decorations, cookware, books, and ephemera from her New York apartment. (Come on, “Goodbye to All That” was right there.)
The art in the collection—which includes works by Jennifer Bartlett, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, Ed Ruscha, and Patti Smith, and photographs of Didion by Brigitte Lacombe, Annie Leibovitz, Mary Ellen Mark, and Julian Wasser—is sure to attract plenty of attention, but I, for one, just want to see what kind of ephemera Didion kept around. And if there’s a tote bag full of tote bags, I will be sending my representatives to bid on it.
All proceeds from the sale will be donated to an unspecified charitable organizations.
