Box Office Results: Doctor Strange 2 Tops $800 Million Worldwide

Film

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues to scare audiences with an estimated $30 million take over the 3-day weekend, which brings its domestic total to $340.5 million after three weeks of release. Worldwide, the latest Marvel sequel has totaled $800 million, including $55.8 million from Imax screens, per Deadline. That’s enough for Disney to hail Strange as the second biggest Hollywood movie of the pandemic era, though it ranks as the No. 11 Marvel movie — for now. All told, industry experts project Strange to end up with around $900-950 million worldwide, excluding China and Russia.

Elsewhere, Downton Abbey: A New Era drew older audiences from the comforts of their home with an expected $18 million opening. While significantly lower than 2019’s Downton Abbey, that film had the benefit of picking up where the series left off three years prior; and was, per the trade, lightning in a bottle. New Era‘s total marks Focus Features’ best opening during the pandemic, ahead of The Northman‘s $12.3 million start and played out as expected. The film will play in theaters for 17 days before hitting streaming platforms.

This week sees the release of the hotly anticipated Tom Cruise vehicle Top Gun: Maverick, which is expected to lead the box office for the next for frames before Jurassic World: Dominion hits in June.
