Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Announced With Release Window

Ghostbusters is just coming off yet another film and is just about to get yet another video game. Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds developer Illfonic has just announced Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, an asymmetrical multiplayer title coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store in Q4 2022.

This game has some elements in common with Illfonic’s prior games, as it pits four humans, who are Ghostbusters in this case, against one being, who is, naturally, a ghost. The ghost is tasked with haunting a map by spooking the civilians within it, while the hunters have to track down and catch the ghost with their array of recognizable gadgets. There will be a handful of different ghost classes with unique abilities and all sorts of customization options that let players tweak anything from their gear to their race and gender.

However, unlike the team’s past titles, this game will feature A.I. Ghostbusters and ghosts, so users don’t have to always play against other human opponents. A.I. can even help fill games so there is less wasted matchmaking. Spirits Unleashed will also feature full cross-play between all platforms, which should also cut down on waiting and also enable more players to play together.

While labeled as “tertiary canon,” the Spirits Unleashed takes place after Ghostbusters: Afterlife and features the voice talent of Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd. The Ecto-1, another iconic bit of Ghostbusters lore, isn’t drivable but is featured in the Ghostbusters’ hub and the game’s loading screens as it loads in the matches.
