In a new video posted to social media, singer and performer Demi Lovato announced that they are non-binary and will be going by they/them pronouns moving forward.

“Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work,” stated Lovato in a newly released video. “Through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel  most authentic to the person that I know I am and still am discovering … I want to make it clear that I’m still learning and coming into myself and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.”

“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.”

While best known for their musical career, Lovato rose to fame in Disney’s Camp Rock in 2008 and has acted sporadically. Since then, Lovato has done voice acting in Smurfs: The Lost Village and Charming and appeared in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Most recently, a documentary series called Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil aired as a YouTube Original and focused on their near-fatal overdose in 2018.
