The Style of Happiness

Culture

Drew Barrymore: Yeah, old soft T-shirts. It’s just the softness, the feel of them, like a second skin, not wearing anything, nothing’s binding, nothing’s tight—it’s like you’re naked without having to be naked. No constriction whatsoever. I didn’t think I would wear clothes until they disintegrated, but I’ve become that person. I hate when they actually literally shred. I’ve had to have some funerals.

Tracy Morgan: No, there’s no materialistic things. I’m not superficial. I wear my happiness on my face.

Mookie Betts: When I dress up, wear suits, that makes me pretty happy. And sometimes I just throw on a suit to go hang out with friends and whatnot. I just enjoy walking around and being in a suit. Bow ties, those type of things, is what sets it off for me. I think I just like the clean look.

Anthony Hopkins: No, I just wear jeans, a torn sweater, or a T-shirt—that’s all I wear. I’m not a fashion model. I don’t dress up in any fancy clothes at all. Nothing like that. I don’t even like going shopping with my wife to buy a suit or anything. I can’t stand it.

Jeremy O. Harris: Oh, yes. So many clothes make me happier when I wear it. There’s this pink robe, I found it at a vintage shop—it’s a Christian Dior robe. I found it for 12 dollars in this random vintage shop. It makes me so completely happy every time I’m wearing it, to no end. So does the coat from Eckhaus Latta I bought after my play [Slave Play] went to Broadway, which was the first coat I ever bought that was, like, a real winter coat that I bought full price, no question. And that makes me incredibly happy, because that felt like this admission that I wasn’t going to be the person who had to sleep on couches forever. I could actually be someone who was able to take care of my family in the way that other people had taken care of me, and take care of my friends in the way they had taken care of me for so many years.

Goldie Hawn: No. I don’t wear clothes to make me happy, I wear clothes to make me comfortable. You know, clothes don’t wear me, I wear them. I got to have a uniform. I’m not a big fashionista.

Samantha Bee: I think that’s very fleeting. I love fall clothing, because it’s really cozy. Big fluffy scarves and light wool coats. I like that feeling of being bundled up. I used to call it “vest weather.” I guess I still do. I’m, like, always very excited when vest weather comes to town. Occasionally, in the fall, I’ll land on something that is really my perfect outfit, which is kind of like sweatery and cocoony. I always love a big scarf. I have in my entire life. Even in high school, I had these giant scarves.

Phoebe Bridgers: Yes! I love to dress up. I’ve started wearing suits to my record label’s Zoom meetings. I’ll just put on a suit—it’s ridiculous. It’s harder to be in a bad mood, or if you are in a bad mood, you feel kind of badass at the same time. I have my Cursive the band’s sweatshirt on right now—feel pretty happy in that. I’m always stoked when it’s clean. It’s one of those ones I wear every day. That makes me pretty happy. I just got some comfortable boots. That makes me happy. I got Blundstones. I’ve been, like, a Doc Martens person forever, but my Docs have a hole in them now, so I got true hiking boots. Those make me happy.
