House of the Dragon: Casting begins on Game of Thrones prequel series

It has been over six months since we’ve last heard an update regarding HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, but it looks like the ongoing pandemic won’t stop the network from making further developments on the Targaryen-centric spinoff. EW brings word that HBO has already begun its casting, and even though official details on casting breakdowns are being kept under wraps rumors have been circulating that HBO is reportedly searching for actresses to portray the series’ female lead characters Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, who were both mentioned in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series will chronicle the rise and the downfall of the Targaryens, who is the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. It will take place 300 years before the events of the award-winning series adaptation of Game of Thrones which aired its final episode last May 2019.

First published in 2018, Fire & Blood was released as a companion to A Song of Ice and Fire. The novel begins its tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
