Alamo Drafthouse Will Require Guests to Wear Masks, AMC Switches Stance
Following AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron’s controversial statements that the theater chain would not require guests to wear masks in an effort to not “be drawn into a political controversy,” Deadline brings word that Aron is reversing course and changing their mask policy.

“With the full support of our scientific advisors, we are reversing course and are changing our guest mask policy. As we reopen theatres, we now will require that all AMC guests nationwide wear masks as they enter and enjoy movies at our theatres. The speed with which AMC moved to revise our mask policies is a reflection of our commitment to the safety and health of our guests,” said Aron.
Originally, the chain had planned on only requiring masks in states who were mandating it. Aron continued that their initial announcement regarding the masks “prompted an intense and immediate outcry from our customers, and it is clear from this response that we did not go far enough on the usage of masks. At AMC Theatres, we think it is absolutely crucial that we listen to our guests.”
Aron stressed that they will be monitoring the “scientific community’s latest thinking as to the efficacy of mask usage” as well as “looking at the varying health conditions in specific localities around our theatres all across the country.” Aron reminded guests that if they do not have a mask, they will be able to purchase them for $1 at the theater, but “those who are unwilling to wear a mask will not be admitted or allowed to stay.”

After seeing the social media response demanding face masks to be required in movie theaters following AMC Theatres’ initial stance, Alamo Drafthouse announced they will be requiring all of its moviegoers nationwide to wear masks.
“When we open, the safety of our teammates and guests cannot be compromised. This is not political,” Alamo stated (via Deadline). “We will require that guests wear masks at the theater (except when eating and drinking). Those without masks will be given one.”
