With voter registration deadlines approaching and misinformation around voter fraud spreading, a newly-formed coalition of writers is volunteering their time to defeat Donald Trump in the presidential election this fall.
The group, Writers Against Trump—whose initial members include Paul Auster, Siri Hustvedt, Carolyn Forché, and Natasha Trethewey—is collecting testimonies from authors about the importance of the upcoming election and why it matters to them, and publishing those statements on its website and Instagram.

After meeting last Friday to discuss other steps, the group also published a note from organizers that encourages writers to volunteer to speak at Biden-Harris events, organize readings and webinars in support of the campaign and activist efforts, and sign up to be a poll watcher, among other actions. An upcoming meeting on Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. will feature talks from author Jill McCorkle and Jillian Johnson, the Movement Voter Project’s advisor for North Carolina.
