Box Office Results: Elvis Battles Tom Cruise for the Domestic Crown

Film

Elvis shared the domestic box office with Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, as both films collected $30.5 million over the weekend, per Deadline. Except, where the King is just kicking off his theatrical run, Maverick continued to cruise in its fifth week of release (down just -33%) and now stands at $521.7 million in the US. All told, the 36-year old sequel has amassed a very impressive $1 billion worldwide (without China!) and easily marks Cruise’s biggest film to date. There’s simply no stopping this train.

As for Elvis, the Baz Luhrmann production earned solid reviews from audiences (72% definite recommend on PostTrak and a 94% RottenTomatoes score), meaning this musical biopic could enjoy a lengthy theatrical run.

Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Dominion came in third with $26.44 million (-55%) in Weekend 3, enough to bring its domestic total to $302.77 million and worldwide sum to $746.7 million. While Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear dropped a massive -65% (the worst decline for a Pixar movie after Onward’s -73% during the pandemic era) in its sophomore frame for a $17.66 millionweekend and an $88.7M domestic total.

Surprisingly, despite the competition, Universal’s thriller The Black Phone managed to pull in a solid $23.3 million in its opening weekend. Clearly, the multiplex is very much alive after what felt like a millennia of mediocre box office performances.
