Liam Neeson’s Honest Thief Steals the Box Office

The Liam Neeson action vehicle Honest Thief rose to the top of the box office with a $3.7M weekend gross, $4.2M overall. Per Deadline, the film played on 2,255 theaters but received a significant boost from Imax (on which it brought in $150K), Dolby, and PLF formats, which the trade notes most of Neeson’s flicks don’t typically have access to.

Audiences and critics were divided on the pic which currently holds a ho hum 35% score on RottenTomatoes out of 40 critics and an 88% audience rating. Honest Thief had solid showings in Miami, Chicago, San Diego and Atlanta.

Second place belongs to the Robert DeNiro comedy War with Grandpa, which dropped to No. 2 in its second week of release with $2.5M, down 31% from last week.

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet enjoyed plenty of success in the Seattle area where theaters recently reopened and brought in an additional $1.6M over the weekend for a $50.6M domestic haul after eight weeks.

Meanwhile, Halloween re-releases Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus collected $1.3M and $756K to round out the Top 5 while Tim Burton’s classic comedy Beetlejuice scared up $172K in the No. 10 spot.

New releases 2 Hearts and Love and Monsters earned $565K and $255K and stood as bookends to The New Mutants ($465K/$22.7M) and Unhinged ($425K/$20M total) in the No. 6 and No. 9 spots, respectively.
